It was founded on January 24, 2004

Name of the website was taken from the name of its creator Orkut Büyükkökten

Orkut Büyükkökten is a Turkish software engineer who was an employee in Google


Majority of Orkut's users were from Brazil and India

There were lots of fake profiles, hate groups etc which later dragged orkut to certain legal issues. Even some countries like USE, Iran and Saudi Arabia banned orkut.


After the introduction of facebook, twitter etc , the popularity of  Orkut reduced

On June 30, 2014 Google announced Orkut's shut down on Sept 30, 2014

How to export Your orkut photos to google plus profile?

Until Sept 30, 2014, You will be able to export your orkut photo albums to Google+

If you have a Google+ account you can can export their photo albums to Google+ in 4 simple steps

  1. Logon to your Google+ account.
  2. Take the Album Export url http://www.orkut.com/AlbumsExport.
  3. Select each album you want to export or You can use Select all Option
  4. Click on "IMPORT SELECTED" botton

The photos will be private and only be visible to you until you share them with other people or circles.

How to download your orkut profile and photos?
You can archive  your Orkut information using Google Takeout in a single ZIP file containing HTML files and JPEG photos. For that visit Google Takeout page https://www.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/orkut
