Tips for staying safe while using Internet

Here are few tips for staying safe while using Internet.

Keep your browser and its plugins updated as most the malwares affects through outdated browser plugins

Use super strong keywords that are not guessable. Use a combination of Alphanumerals (both lower and upper case) and special characters

Use a different password for each account. Do not use your personal information in passwords and never share it with others.

Make sure that the site you are using is the correct one. Incase of using banking sites confirm whether you are using the correct urls epically when submitting your login credentials.

Change your password once every three months. For banking sites it is recommended to change passwords once every 2 weeks.

Confirm whether a site is secure before entering personal information. There are fake / Phishing sites which has similar designs of the actual one and users may accidently submit there login details.

Check Whether the URL start with HTTPS (instead of HTTP)? And second, is there a “lock” icon on the URL bar that shows that you are on a secured website.

Install a good Antivirus software on your machine and do some period system scan

Always perform a device scan when you are using a plug in device such as external hard disk, USB disk etc

URL address on the address bar of your internet browser begins with "https"; the letter 's' at the end of "https" means 'secured'.

Look for the padlock symbol either in the address bar or the status bar (mostly in the address bar) but not within the web page display area. Verify the security certificate by clicking on the padlock.

The address bar has turned to green indicating that the site is secured with an SSL Certificate that meets the Extended Validation Standard.(Available in IE 7.0 and above, Mozilla Firefox 3.1 and above, Opera 9.5 and above, Safari 3.5 and above, Google chrome).

Avoid accessing Internet banking accounts from cyber cafes or shared PCs.

Do not enter login or other sensitive information in any pop up window.

Do not respond to fake email asking for Financial info.

Do not click on any links in any e-mail message to access the site.

Do not be lured if you receive an e-mail/SMS/phone call promising reward for providing your personal information or for updating your account details in the bank site.

NEVER respond to any popup,email, SMS or phone call, no matter how appealing or official looking, seeking your personal information such as username, password(s), mobile number, ATM Card details, etc. Such communications are sent or created by fraudsters to trick you into parting with your credentials.

Having the following will improve your internet security:

Newer version of Operating System with latest security patches.

Latest version of Browsers (IE 7.0 and above , Mozilla Firefox 3.1 and above, Opera 9.5 and above, Safari 3.5 and above, Google chrome,etc.)

Firewall is enabled.

Antivirus signatures applied

Scan your computer regularly with Antivirus to ensure that the system is Virus/Trojan free.

Change your Internet Banking password at periodical intervals.

Always check the last log-in date and time in the post login page.

Steps for creating strong password:
You may use following method to create  a strong password:
Select a phrase that you can remember. For example let it be something like  "being a techie is good sometimes". from that take the first letters of each words.

"batigs" 

make first and last letter upper case : "BatigS"
Add a special char to make it more strong : "BatigS$"
for Youtube use the password as YTBatigS$
for Gmail use the password as GMBatigS$
for Facebook use the password as FBBatigS$
