How to interchange the rows and columns in a Open Office spreadsheet or Calc document - Transposing data in a spreadsheet

How to interchange the rows and columns in a Open Office spreadsheet document - Transposing data in a spreadsheet

How to interchange the rows and columns in a Open Office spreadsheet document

Suppose you have spreadsheet data like this:

AB
1LANGUAGEDATABASE
2PHPMYSQL
3JAVASQLSERVER
4DOTNETMSACCESS

and You want to interchange rows and column data or transponsing the data like this:

ABCD
1LANGUAGEPHPJAVADOTNET
2DATABASEMYSQLSQLSERVERMSACCESS

Transposing data in a spreadsheet

For this ...What you have to do is copy the content from the first spread sheet and then open the next spread sheet
then click on the "Edit" option and click one the "Paste Special" , then an option box will appear, in that "tick" on the "Transpose" option and click "Okay"

Now your Open Office Spreadsheet data is transposed :)

Possible Error

if you are getting an error like the one given below:
"There is not enough space on the sheet to insert here"

this means there is not enough rows or columns in the new spreadsheet to write the copied data. So before writing to a new spreadsheet please make sure there is enough space.

from the above example:

first table (before transposing) has 2 columns and 4 rows of data
and the transposed table has 4 columns and 2 rows.

so before pasting the contents of first table to generate the transpose, make sure that the new spread sheet document has atleast 4 coulmns and 2 rows.

this is very simple example, just think about data that has more rows and columns :)

With current releases of OpenOffice, calc will not handle more than 256 columns. If you copy a range with more than 256 rows, you can't paste+transpose in Calc.
